Phil Wells grew up on a farm in Cummington, Massachusetts in the Berkshire hills, and became a country music fan in the late '40's when he attended a local country music show. He went on to discover the old time Saturday night radio broadcasts, such as the WWVA Jamboree, the Old Dominion Barn Dance, and of course the Grand Ole' Opry. Phil vividly remembers hearing his old favorite performers such as Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Louvin Brothers. He began to collect counry and bluegrass records, 78s at fisrt, then 45s, LPs, tapes, and lately CDs after they came out. Phil has worked on several Bear Family reissues of classic country and bluegrass music, including box sets of Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, and Hank Snow. Phil's regular show, "Maple East Bluegrass", is named after the old family farm in the Berkshires, and is heard on the second Sunday of every month. He also fills in occasionally with a classic country music show, "Heartbreak Jamboree". |
